When saint Patrick was sent to Ireland in the fifth century to evangelize the Irish, he was confronted with an old, hierarchical social system that had been preserved from major foreign influences. A hundred and fifty years later Irish missionaries crossed the ocean to build monasteries in Europe and spread their strict rules and their spirituality. The transition from paganism to Christianity in Ireland seems to have resulted from a progressive and peaceful process that gave birth to Irish Christianity with its typical features. In early medieval Ireland, scribes in their monasteries tried to gather the stories that pre-Christian poets used to learn, teach and recite. The monks therefore transcribed a wide and varied corpus of tales in manuscripts. Irish tales are thus emblematic of |the Irish paradox| that combined Celtic inheritance with the new religion. The immrama and the Navigation of saint Brendan in particular, all of which are voyage tales to the Otherworld, are built on the same narrative pattern and show the influence of Christianity on native tradition. Through a comparison of three voyage tales, the following study intends to analyse the transition from paganism to Christianity in Ireland with its consequences
